County leaders in Tift County are standing with residents who say they do not want to see the proposed US-82 bypass run through their neighborhoods. County Commissioners drafted a letter to GDOT this week, saying they will not give their support towards a bypass route on Carpenter Road in southwest Tifton.
While residents say a highway would decrease their quality of life, Tift County Manager Jim Carter said they would be more than happy to sit down with the DOT and look at alternative sites for the bypass.
The road has been in the works for several years, as DOT officials have been trying to decrease truck traffic on 82 through Tifton. A public meeting is scheduled for August 22nd at Moultrie Tech.
