A report released Tuesday from the AP and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution revealed that nearly 2 million Georgians are now on food stamps, nearly double the number that were on state rolls in 2007.
Of those nearly 2 million people, state records show around a quarter are under the age of 6. Of the 1.91 million, 58 percent of those who are old enough to work are employed.
In the six years since the recession hit, Georgia has gone from having the 15th-highest proportion of food stamp recipients to sixth-highest. About one in five Georgians in urban, suburban and rural areas are food stamp recipients.
