SCOTUS Ruling On DOMA, Prop 8 Irrelevant To FL Marriage Amendment

weddingWashington, DC- While yesterday’s landmark rulings by the Supreme Court have LGBT advocates celebrating, the rulings still do not affect the constitutional amendments already in place in Florida which define marriage as between a man and woman.

The rulings handed down yesterday stated that DOMA, or the Defense of Marriage Act, was unconstitutional; and also upheld a lower court’s decision in California that their Proposition 8 was also in direct violation of the founding document.

What the court did not address in their findings was any gay marriage bans in other states. In 2008, Florida voters gave the green light for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. Unless that issue shows up on the ballot and garners 60 percent of the vote, that amendment cannot be overturned.
