Sequester Forces Nat’l Weather Service Cuts As Hurricane Season Comes

budget moneyOne behind-the-scenes group that has been lost in the sequester cuts is the National Weather Service. While organizations like the FAA garnered headlines when they announced air traffic controllers would be forced to go on furlough, there was a massive outcry. Now that the NWS must do the same, it has hardly made a peep.

NWS officials worry that the cuts could impact forecasting and public safety, especially with the Atlantic hurricane season set to begin in three weeks.

As for our local NWS office in Tallahassee, they will be short four meteorologists- that means a staff of 14 is responsible for covering weather in 48 Georgia, Florida, and Alabama counties.
