Although most people don’t think of Georgia when they think blueberries, the state has become the nation’s second leading producer of the fruit. Unfortunately, thanks to wet and inconsistent weather this spring, many blueberry crops are well behind schedule.

The harvest is usually already underway by May 1st, but on most fields in Georgia, picking hasn’t even started. Where most berries are ready to pick in April, farmers in south Georgia say very few are ready to eat even now in early May.

Blueberry growers estimate that a full harvest will begin within the next couple of weeks.
