Tallahassee, FL- The Florida Senate has unanimously passed legislation to outlaw text messaging by all drivers.
Senate Bill 52, written by Senator Nancy Detert (R-Venice), created the ‘Florida Ban on Texting While Driving Law,’ which makes texting, emailing or instant messaging while driving a secondary offense. A first violation is a non-moving violation and a subsequent offense within a five-year period is a moving violation with fines and points assessed.
The legislation now heads to the Florida House for final passage. If the House passes the bill Florida would become the 40th state to ban texting while driving.
