MILLAGE INCREASE COMING FOR MOULTRIE
Members of the Moultrie City Council voted to increase the millage rate by 1.85 mills along with a 58.9 million dollar budget. Many residents of the area had spoken out against the millage rate increase but city leaders stated that their intent was to make their general fund more self sufficient.
COMMODITY PRICES DROPPING
Commodity prices continue a downward spiral and that has cotton farmers across the state of Georgia concerned. Over the past four months the price has dropped 20 percent due to increased production around the world. In 2011 the state of Georgia’s cotton crop hit a record high value of almost 1.3 billion dollars.
COOK STUDENT SPENDS NIGHT IN JAIL
17 year old Cook County High School student Austin Guthrie remained in jail overnight. He was arrested on the parking lot of the school after a report was issued stating that he had brought a handgun to campus. Officers found the 22 caliber pistol inside a bag carried by the 17 year old. His grandmother notified the authorities that he was distraught over a girlfriend and that he was armed.
