VALDOSTA, GA – A six car wreck Sunday night ended tragically on Highway U.S. 84.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, at approximately 8:24 p.m. Sunday, a white car collided with a semi-truck while traveling eastbound on Highway 84 near James Road in Valdosta. The accident left both vehicles disabled in the westbound lane, according to officials.
After the accident, the driver of the car, Ashokkumar Patel, 69 , of Valdosta, sustained minor injuries, and was being treated by a nurse who had witnessed the accident, according to GSP.
According to authorities, a second collision then occurred when vehicles in the westbound lane, including another semi-truck, hit the disabled vehicles. The nurse tending to Patel, Martitia “Marty” Jones, 58, of Barwick, died as a result of the second collision, according to Brad Carter Lowndes County deputy coroner. Patel was transported to South Georgia Medical Center, but later died in the emergency room.
Jones, grandmother of four, was a registered nurse with Archbold Medical Center. At least two others were injured in the accident.
Charges are pending in the incident.
