VALDOSTA, GA- A local teacher at W.G. Nunn Elementary has earned national recognition for outstanding performance in advancing reading practice and proficiency.
Teresa Bannister was awarded Accelerated Reader Model Classroom Certification by Renaissance Learning, a Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., based company.
Model Classroom Certification acknowledges that Ms. Bannister’s efforts to promote personalized reading practice, assess comprehension, and monitor progress have resulted in measurable improvements in reading proficiency.
Accelerated Reader Model Classroom Certification demonstrates that a majority of her students have met or exceeded goals for reading practice and comprehension. After reading fiction and non-fiction books at the appropriate level, students take quizzes to assess their comprehension. Accelerated Reader provides immediate feedback to help teachers facilitate reading level growth.
Mr. Diaz, principle of W.G. Nunn Elementary stated, “I am proud of Ms. Bannister and her 4th grade students for achieving this status this year. The accelerated reader program encourages students to read while creating reports to allow the teacher to monitor. The goal is to develop lifelong readers. Having a high number of students in her class participating in reading is not only beneficial but also very rewarding!”
This is Ms. Bannister’s 12th year reaching Accelerated Reader Model Classroom Certification. Bannister earned her BA at VSU, her Master’s at Troy State, and her Specialist degree from NOVA. “I am honored to receive this award again,” said Bannister, “The students have worked hard to keep up with their Accelerated Reading goals. The excitement on their faces when I told them of our Model Classroom status was priceless!” “Knowing that you are making a difference in the lives of your students is a blessing,” stated Bannister.
