Live Oak Mayor Vetoes Council Move To Allow Sunday Alcohol Sales

Share with friends

live oakAfter months of back-and-forth arguing, a city council vote, and even the issue appearing on the ballot, there will be no Sunday sales of alcohol in Live Oak. Despite the city council voting last month 3-2 to allow the Sunday sales, Mayor Sonny Nobles vetoed that decision at a Tuesday night meeting.

Nobles said that he is against the sale of any alcohol on Sunday- while he claimed he was ‘trying to keep his religious beliefs…out of this’, he went on to say that he is against the sale because ‘it is the Lord’s day.’

The move by Mayor Nobles comes after voters in Live Oak voted to approve Sunday sales by a near 60-40 margin. While some exceptions have been made for restaurants, the veto by Nobles means no alcohol can be sold at bars, grocery, or package stores on Sundays.
