The Valdosta Main Street office kicks off the 3rd annual Downtown Valdosta Farm Days season on Saturday, May 4. The popular farmers market will take place on the sidewalks around the historic courthouse in downtown Valdosta, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., on the first and third Saturday, rain or shine, through the end of October and every Saturday during the month of June.
On market Saturdays, vendors offer a variety of goods for sale such as locally-grown, locally-raised, locally-produced fruits and vegetables, plants, herbs, meats, farm-fresh eggs and dairy products, organic produce, baked and prepared foods, and snacks. Patrons will also find a variety of artisan and natural products including birdhouses, handmade soaps and body products, candles, honey products, and products made from recycled goods. Those who arrive early to shop have the advantage of beating the heat and getting the best picks of the season.
The market also serves as a venue to educate the community on healthy local food options. Cooking demonstrations and information promoting healthy eating habits are available on site for market patrons and emphasize the correlation between food choices and the impact they have on the general health and environment. In addition, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants can use their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards to purchase goods.
According to the 2012 Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing, a lack of access to healthy and affordable food choices was identified as an impediment for high poverty and low income minority populations in our community. The Downtown Valdosta Farm Days addresses this impediment by promoting access to healthy food choices and providing education on nutrition and healthy eating. While poverty related impediments are not likely to be eliminated, the report applauded and encouraged the City of Valdosta to continue to work with community partners to improve local conditions.
To celebrate the 3rd season of the market, Downtown Valdosta Farm Days will host a raffle for customers on Saturday, May 4.
“Our vendors are donating items that will be placed into a gift basket to be given away on Saturday, at 12:30 p.m.,” said Amanda Peacock, Valdosta Main Street Manager. “Market shoppers should stop by the Farm Days information booth to sign up for the raffle. The lucky Farm Days patron must be present at the time of the drawing to win the basket.”
New vendors are always welcome, as well as the diverse mix of returning vendors. Contact the Valdosta Main Street office at (229) 259-3577 or ehill@valdostacity.com for more information, or visit our Facebook page for updates throughout the season at facebook.com/DowntownValdostaFarmDays.
