The Valdosta Lowndes Regional Crime Lab now has the ability to analyze drugs, which could lead to faster prosecutions and tax-payer savings.
Analyzing drugs at the lab will speed up the investigation of cases in Lowndes County by eliminating the need of law enforcement to rely on outside labs. State labs can take months to complete a test, but the local lab can complete the analysis in just 21 days.
The money previously used to pay labs outside the county will now be used for the salaries of three fully-trained chemists. The Valdosta Police and Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office say that the lab could provide their services to outside agencies in the future, lessening the heavy workload of state labs.
