TALLAHASSEE, FL— The Department of State’s Museum of Florida History announces the 31st Annual Children’s Day on January 25, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This popular family event offers an array of performers, exhibitors, and history.
This year’s theme, “Imagine You Were There” complements the Museum’s special exhibit currently on display, Imagining La Florida. Children and adults can learn about Florida history from the State’s Archaeological Research Lab and Mission San Luis or take in some science with the Challenger Learning Center. More than 30 organizations will be represented, each offering a unique message or display.
“This is one of the Museum’s most popular events, and many organizations come together to make it happen,” said Secretary of State Ken Detzner. “It’s such a wonderful event, full of learning, activities, and performances. I think the adults enjoy it as much as the children!”
Live performances are presented by the African Caribbean Dance Theatre, Young Actors Theatre, Trousdell Gymnastics, and many others. Activities such as face painting, balloon animals, hands-on history, and free bicycle helmets presented by the Pilot Club, ensure a fun-filled day for people of all ages.
According to Children’s Day Coordinator Anita DeCan, “The most gratifying part of Children’s Day is looking at the faces of the children and seeing pure joy and excitement… the event is proof that it’s possible to have fun and learn at the same time.”
Parking and admission are free. Some activities require tickets that can be purchased at the event or in advance at the Museum gift shop. Lunch is available for purchase from The Egg Express Café in the Museum lobby. For more information, call 850.245.6400 or go to museumoffloridahistory.com.
The special exhibit on display, Imagining La Florida, offers an interactive look at Florida’s early colonial history. The exhibit was organized by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) of Spain and the Spain-Florida Foundation in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the Spanish Consulate in Miami. It is curated by Florida historian Dr. J. Michael Francis and is one of the events at the Department of State commemorating Viva Florida 500.
The Museum of Florida History is part of the Florida Department of State’s Division of Cultural Affairs, and is located in the R. A. Gray Building at 500 South Bronough Street, Tallahassee, Florida. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Sunday and holidays, noon to 4:30 p.m. Parking is available in the garage adjacent to the Museum and in nearby downtown garages.
