Men’s Tennis Shuts Out DSU to Advance to GSC Semifinals

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Valdosta State men’s team capped off a perfect day of Blazer and Lady Blazer tennis, following the women’s earlier 5-0 quarterfinal win with a 5-0 win of their own over the Delta State Statesmen on Thursday at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala.

The opening round win of the GSC Tournament boosted Valdosta State to 14-4 on the season and marked the team’s 10th consecutive victory. Meanwhile, the Statesmen saw their season come to an end at 5-12 overall.

Leo Blay teamed up with Lowndes High graduate Davis Stewart at No. 3 doubles to give Valdosta State their first point of the day with an 8-3 win over Mason Vice and Joao Yamacita. Soon after, Jordi Mas and Fernando Rivas matched the effort with an 8-3 victory over Timo Schmitz and Andrew Hildenbrand at No. 2.

The Blazers’ most exciting win of the day came at No. 1 doubles, as Axel Holm and Eden Peleg overcame a 4-1 deficit to take down Hicham Azzaoui and Jeoffrey Noblecourt, 8-6, and send VSU into singles action with a 3-0 lead.

Davis continued his strong day with a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Hildenbrand at No. 4 singles, and Valentin Mounoto put the finishing touches on the match at No. 6 with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win over Oleg Balabko.

The Blazers now turn their attention to the semifinal round, which is slated for a 2:30 p.m. EST start against the No. 3 seeded North Alabama Lions on Friday in Montgomery, Ala.
