MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Valdosta State women’s tennis made quick work of the Lee Lady Flames to net a 5-0 win in the opening round of the 2017 Gulf South Conference Tournament on Thursday at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala.

Bea Morales Hernandez and Anke Poncelet, who currently represent the South Region’s No. 7 ranked doubles contingent, picked up an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Francesca Tondi and Marta Garcia-Nieto, just after Anja Cosovic and Daniela Barta opened up the scoring for VSU with an 8-2 win over Krista Good and Nicole Shennett at No. 2.

Valdosta State secured the doubles sweep, when Laura Ubeda and Estes Widdershoven joined for an 8-5 victory over Joanna Grzegrzolka and Laura Beth Hardesty at No. 3.

Momentum continued into singles play, as Daniella Barta quickly knocked off Hardesty, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5, before Sabrina Schmidt slammed the door on the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Garcia-Nieto at No. 3.

The win vaulted the Lady Blazers into the semifinal round of the postseason tournament, which will take place at 10:00 a.m. EST on Friday against either West Alabama or Alabama Huntsville.
