ATHENS — In a move that has been expected for some time, Georgia quarterback Jacob Park (Goose Creek, S.C./Stratford High School) announced that he was leaving the football team.

In a post on his Facebook page, Park thanked the Bulldogs fans.

“I just want to say thank u (sic) Dawg Nation and everyone else who made my stay in Athens special … Never will forget the people and friends … time to move on and turn the page to the next chapter.”

He later deleted the post.

Rumors began swirling a few months ago that Park was planning to transfer after never taking a snap in any of Georgia’s three scrimmages with the No. 1 offense. Those rumors redoubled recently when Georgia coaches accepted the transfer of former Virginia quarterback Greyson Lambert. Park did return for the Georgia summer session and enrolled in classes. He even worked out with the team on Tuesday, but afterwards cleaned out his locker according to a source who spoke to him after practice. Park told that same source, “I quit.”

Officials from the University of Georgia could not confirm that Park was leaving and the third string quarterback did not answer repeated calls and texts from UGASports.

Park ran the Georgia scout team last year as a redshirt freshman and this fall joined the race to be the starting quarterback with fellow signal callers Brice Ramsey and Faton Bauta. By the time spring was over, it was clear that Ramsey and Bauta were 1A and 1B and Park, who is loved by many of his teammates, was third.

Park eventual destination is unclear but he has been linked to Colorado State where former Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo is now the head coach. Park could change his mind – players have don so in the past – but if not there will be no shortage of schools courting his services.
