Valdosta State Baseball Falls 14-3 to Alabama-Huntsville

VALDOSTA, GA – Alabama-Huntsville used a pair of big offensive innings to defeat Valdosta State 14-3 in Gulf South Conference baseball action at Billy Grant Field Sunday afternoon.

After each team scored a run in the first inning, Alabama-Huntsville (25-13, 14-7) took advantage of three Valdosta State errors in the third inning to score four more runs. Justin Riddle singled to open the first before the Blazers (21-13, 12-10) committed errors on three straight ground balls to allow Riddle and Chase Handley to score. After a strike out, Conner McCain drove in a run with a ground out while Colton Simbeck singled home the final run to put UAH in front 5-1.

VSU got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Clint Carr singled to open the frame before Hunter Thompson put runners on the corners with a base hit. Bryant Hayman followed with a single to right-center that scored Carr and moved Thompson to third while Matthew Fears hit a ball to left that was caught at the wall to drive home Thompson and cut the Valdosta State deficit to 5-3.

The Chargers added six runs on just three hits in the top of the eighth inning before scoring three runs in the top of the ninth.

Carr was 3-for-3 to lead Valdosta State offensively in the game while Mike Reed, Thompson Jimmy Dowdell and Kevin Cruz all had two hits as VSU out-hit the Chargers 14-11 in the contest.

Dom DeMasi fell to 5-3 on the year as he allowed five runs, only one earned, on five hits and six walks in 6.2 innings. UAH’s Drew Eiland allowed 14 hits and three earned runs in 7.2 innings to improve to 6-1.

Valdosta State returns to action Tuesday when the Blazers travel to Americus, Ga. to take on Georgia Southwestern at 5:00 p.m.
