MIAMI SHORES, FL – Valdosta State shot a first round 302 and followed it with a second round 292 to finish the first day of play 10th at the Buccaneer Invitational at the par 71, 6,733 yard Normandy Shores Country Club Monday.

The Blazers finished the first day at 26-over-par and 41 strokes behind tournament leader and host Barry, which shot 283-270. Saint Leo was second at 568 after a 282-286 while Johnson and Wales was three strokes behind after shooting 282-289. Nova Southeastern was four-over-par at 572 with a 283 and 289 while Florida Tech (282-294), Chico State (282-294) and St. Edward’s (288-288) tied for fifth at 576.

Montevallo was eighth at 580 after shooting 291-289 while Wilmington bested the Blazers by nine strokes after rounds of 291 and 294. Eastern Florida State was a shot behind VSU at 595 after rounds of 295-300 and Colorado-Colorado Springs followed at 597 after shooting a 302 and a 295. Georgia Southwestern shot 302-298 to shoot 600 while Tampa rounded out the field at 612 after shooting 311-301.

John Fordham shot 71 in each round to tie for 10th on the day at 142 while Alex Jones shot 75-68 to tie for 20th at 143. Michael Nutter tallied a 78 and a 76 to tie for 58th at 154 and Florian Schmiedel shot 78 in both rounds to tie for 68th at 156. Austin McNeill tallied an 83 followed by a 77 to round out the Blazers squad with a 160 to tie for 75th.

The tournament concludes with a single round of play Tuesday beginning at 7:35 a.m.
