VSU Student Struck By Truck On I-75 Dies

Valdosta Today - I-75 GeorgiaValdosta, GA- A 19-year old from Cairo who was attending Valdosta State University has died after being hit by a truck on I-75 early Tuesday morning. The accident happened near MM 19 around 1am.

GSP troopers say Marcus Holmes walked into the interstate wearing dark-colored athletic clothing and was struck by a UPS truck as it headed northbound. Holmes lived at the nearby Grove Apartments, where police found his vehicle.

Sgt. Carl Taylor of the GSP said Tuesday that the truck driver was unable to avoid hitting the teenager, and there was no indication of alcohol or intoxicants involved in the crash.

Late Tuesday, VSU President Dr. Bill McKinney issued the following statement:

It is with great sadness that I must inform you of the death of Mr. Marcus Holmes, a sophomore from Cairo, Georgia. On behalf of the entire VSU family, we extend our deepest sympathy to the Holmes family. VSU counselors are available for students who need assistance and may be reached at 229-333-5940.
