HBR940Harvard Business Review:

NOT MANY PEOPLE WANT TO BE MANAGERS ANYMORE

CareerBuilder surveyed thousands of workers to gauge their interest in becoming managers in the future. Just over a third (34%) said they had no such aspirations. This is a problem for companies that have a need for up-and-coming managers. Why the resistance? Respondents cited contentment in their current jobs, a lack of education, and a fear of altering their work-life balance as reasons for their reluctance. Not everyone should be on a management track, of course, but for companies in desperate need of new leaders, the shallow talent pool is a concern. That’s why they need to step up their game by providing better leadership development (that would take care of people’s education concerns), and — most importantly — by providing more flexibility to their workers (which will assuage some of the fears about work-life balance).
