Why Fear is Your Friend

Fear is good. Fear heightens our senses and makes us more alert. It makes us ready to fight (or run)!

Fear lets us know we are alive. We can never be bored while being scared. Soren Kierkegaard stated, “boredom is the root of all evil.” Think about that. If you are bored at your work, your hobbies or your life – what are you accomplishing? Not much!

To get away from boredom in our work or our lives we must embrace risk. Risk causes fear. Which makes fear good!

Many of you are thinking that fear is good because it keeps us away from danger. When fear stops you from going down a dark alley in the dark of night, I would agree. But so often fear should be telling us to keep going, to keep pushing.

Think back to the most exhilarating moments in your life.

  • Speaking your mind in front of a large audience.
  • The moments before the big game or race you have been training for.
  • Standing up for someone or something that mattered to you.
  • Asking the girl of your dreams out for a first date (Thank God mine said yes!).

Were you scared? Fearful? Heck yes, you were!

We’ve got to start thinking of fear as a good thing. A sign we are on the right path. A sign we are treading on the shaky ground we were called to tread on.

The next time you start to feel a little dread, a little fear, invite it in. You are most likely on the right path!
