Valdosta GSP: 20 crashes, one fatality during Independence Day holiday period

VALDOSTA – During the 102 hour Independence Day Holiday Period which started on Friday, June 30 and ended Tuesday, July 4, Georgia State Patrol Post 31 Troopers investigated 20 crashes with seven injuries and one fatality.

Of the 20 crashes, seven were caused from a driver following too closely, four were caused from driver’s failing to maintain their lane of travel, four were caused by driver’s failing to yield, four were caused by distracted drivers, and two drivers were under the influence.

Post 31 Troopers conducted 310 traffic stops resulting in 210 citations and 260 warnings. Troopers issued 113 speeding citations, 20 seatbelt violations, five child restraint violations, nine distracted driving citations, two drug arrests and made seven DUI arrests.

Statewide, Georgia State Patrol investigated 620 traffic crashes resulting in 216 injuries. Troopers investigated 11 of the 17 fatal crashes over the holiday period. State Troopers arrested 262 people for driving under the influence. Troopers also issued 9,945 citations and 14,767 warnings during the holiday period.
