Valdosta GSP: 17 crashes, 16 injuries, no fatalities over Memorial Day

VALDOSTA – During the 78 hour Memorial Day Holiday Period which started on Friday, May 26th and ended Monday, May 29th, Post 31 Troopers investigated 17 crashes with 16 injuries and 0 fatalities.

Of the 17 crashes, four were caused from a driver following too closely, three were caused from driver’s failing to maintain their lane of travel, four were caused by driver’s failing to yield, three were caused by distracted drivers, and two were caused by an impaired driver.

Post 31 Troopers conducted 274 traffic stops resulting in 186 citations and 173 warnings. Troopers issued 118 speeding citations, 10 seatbelt violations, three child restraint violations, 12 distracted driving citations, two drug arrests and made four DUI arrests.

Statewide, Georgia State Patrol investigated 414 traffic crashes resulting in 204 injuries. Troopers investigated 5 of the 18 fatal crashes. Fatal crashes were reported from Post 40 – Albany, Post 33 – Milledgeville, Post 7 – Toccoa, Post 9 – Marietta and Post 47 – Forrest Park . Local agencies reporting traffic deaths during the holiday period were: Atlanta P.D. (5), Cobb County P.D., Henry County P.D., Fulton County S.O., Gwinnett County P.D., Clayton County S.O., Monroe County S.O., Columbus P.D., and Bibb County S.O. Total fatality count for the holiday period ended at 18 with 12 being in the metro Atlanta area. In addition to crash investigations, State Troopers arrested 262 people for driving under the influence.
