Five Blazers Earn GSC Spring All-Academic Honors

| June 12, 2017

VALDOSTA – The student-athletes of Valdosta State put in countless hours of work in an effort to achieve their academic goals last semester, and they were well represented this week, as five different student-athletes were named to the 2017 GSC FireSeeds Spring All-Academic team by the league office on Tuesday.

The GSC All-Academic teams are selected by the conference’s Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a vote. Nominees must be significant contributors to their squads, must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale, and may not be freshman or first-semester/quarter transfers.

Head Coach John Hansen‘s women’s tennis team accounted for two of the five Blazers to be recognized, as Daniella Barta joined Anja Cosovic on the list of honorees. Barta and Cosovic teamed up to help lead the Lady Blazers to an appearance in both the GSC Championship match and the NCAA South Region final, and Cosovic’s effort earned the senior All-GSC honors.

The Blazer baseball team joined the fray with the addition of All-Region outfielder Dalton Murray, who posted a 3.33 GPA as a marketing major during his first year at Valdosta State. In addition, Brandy Morgan represented Blazer softball with a 3.82 GPA. The Jasper, Fla. native’s academic accomplishments complemented a stellar season on the field that resulted in a career high 16 home runs, four of which came during postseason play.

Finally, Head Coach Jared Purvis‘ Blazer golf team added to the list with the inclusion of Healthcare Administration major, Davis Roche. Roche earned his first GSC All-Academic honor thanks to a 3.93 GPA alongside a season which led to an invitation to the NCAA Division II South Regional.

In addition to the five student-athletes to be voted to the GSC’s All-Academic team in the spring, Valdosta State saw 36 student-athletes named to the Gulf South Conference’s Spring Honor Roll for having a 3.00 GPA or higher.
