Valdosta man indicted for malice murder in retaliation shooting

VALDOSTA – A grand jury has indicted a Valdosta man for murder for the alleged fatal shooting of a man he beleived shot and killed his brother.

Justin Brown, 28, was indicted by a Superior Court of Lowndes County grand jury for malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to court documents.

Brown is charged with the shooting death of Emory Carter Jr.

Police say Carter was the shooter in a November 2016 incident, which was described as a robbery, in which Brian Moore was found shot to death at his home in the 2400 block of Knox Drive.

Police say some of Moore’s family and friends were aware that Carter was the shooter but didn’t disclose the information to Law Enforcement. VPD says that the silence “severely hindered” the investigation.

According to VPD, Carter was shot several times and killed while walking through the Ora Lee West housing complex two weeks later by Justin Brown, 28, Moore’s brother.

“Had Moore’s family and friends come forward and shared information with law enforcement, another tragedy may have been averted. In some circles, the idea of seeking revenge is more appealing than seeking justice through lawful means,” VPD Chief Brian Childress said.

Moore is the brother of former FSU player and current Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker, Telvin Smith.
