First Inning Surge Lifts UAH Over Blazer Baseball 11-5

| May 8, 2017

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Alabama-Huntsville Chargers stormed out of the gate for a six-run first inning, which led to the downfall of the Valdosta State baseball team in an 11-5 loss on the second day of Gulf South Conference Tournament action at Ferriss Field in Cleveland, Tenn.

Facing freshman Cooper Cain, the Chargers used three singles, two walks, and a hit batsmen to force Cain out of the contest during the first inning of Sunday’s critical matchup for the Valdosta State Blazers. Alabama-Huntsville added two more singles against reliever Daniel Williams to fashion six runs in the opening frame and take a 6-0 lead.

Williams proceeded to pitch 5.2 innings for the Blazers from that point forward and allowed just three hits and one run. Valdosta State could never recover from UAH’s early blow, however, despite a four-run fifth inning that included five Blazer hits and a two-run homer by BJ White.

Taylor Clemons picked up the victory for UAH to improve to 4-4 on the season and lift the Chargers to a 23-27 record on the year. Meanwhile, Cain suffered his first loss of the season to fall to 4-1. The Blazers overall record dropped to 33-19.

Valdosta State’s chance to appear in the GSC Championship game were dashed with the loss, but the Blazers will have one final opportunity to make an argument for a position in the NCAA South Regional when they square off against the top-seeded Delta State Statesmen on Monday night at 6:00 p.m. EST.
