VSU Baseball Torches Flagler For 6-1 Win

| April 7, 2017

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Despite a lightning delay of nearly two hours on Wednesday in St. Augustine, Fla., the Valdosta State bats used a strong offensive output to secure a convincing 6-1 non-conference victory over the Flagler Saints.

Valdosta State opened up the scoring right away against starter Louis Pugliese, thanks to an Elias Macias walk, followed by a bunt single by Kendall Herron and an RBI double off the bat of Luke Suchon. The two-bagger represented Suchon’s sixth double of the season and marked the first of two hits in the game for the junior, which boosted his batting average to .395, fourth in the Gulf South Conference.

The strong early start helped launch the Blazers into a surge that led to at least one run in each of the first five innings of the game. Valdosta State’s most productive frame came in the fourth, when Chipper Andzel reached on a walk, before BJ White, who made his first appearance since February 26th, slugged a two-run round-tripper over the right field wall. The homer marked White’s first as a Blazer, and accounted for two of his four RBI’s in the game.

Following one lone run for the Saints in the bottom half of the first inning, starter Daniel Williams held Flagler scoreless for the next two innings before turning the game over to Cooper Cain. Cain, who was credited with the victory with four strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work, was followed by Roman Donofro, Troy Massaro, and Beau Blair. The contingent teamed up to hold Flagler scoreless throughout the remainder of the contest and help secure the win.

Valdosta State improved their strong 2017 record to 22-13 on the season after the win, while the Saints dropped to 22-15 overall.

After a fourth inning single, Herron notched his 28th stolen base of the season, which currently places him all alone at the top of the NCAA Division II stolen base leaderboard.

Valdosta State’s next matchup will take place in Huntsville, Ala. on Saturday against the Chargers, with the first game of the weekend three-game series set to begin at 1:00 p.m. EST. Look for coverage of the event at www.vstateblazers.com.
