Baseball Drops Series Finale to West Georgia, 9-3

| April 18, 2017

VALDOSTA – The Valdosta State baseball team’s bid for a weekend sweep fell short on Saturday, as West Georgia took down the Blazers 9-3 in the series finale at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park in Valdosta, Ga.

A quiet first inning transitioned to an eventful second, as the Wolves strung together four hits, including a two-run double by Dalton Gilliam, to give UWG an early 3-0 lead. One inning later, the Wolves added two more hits against Austin Hamilton for an additional run and a four-run lead.

Valdosta State returned fire in the bottom half of the third, after Clint Carr rapped a single through the left side and Kendall Herron struck a double down the right field line to move Carr to third. Ryan Slaughter followed with a sacrifice fly into foul territory outside the right field line, but the one run was all that Tyler Garner would allow.

The Wolves padded their lead in the sixth with three more runs and extended the lead further in the seventh with two runs on Gilliam’s second two-run double of the day.

The Blazers plated one run in both the sixth and the ninth, but Dalton Reagin relieved Garner after VSU’s sixth inning run and struck out five in 3.1 innings to help preserve the lead and give Garner his second win of the year.

Valdosta State cycled through six different pitchers in the game, and Hamilton was forced to settle for the loss, as the Wolves improved to 14-25 overall and 7-20 in conference play. The Blazers, who currently sit in a fifth place tie in the conference standings, fell to 15-12 on the year and dropped to 27-15 overall on the season.

The Blazers continue a busy week on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup against Brewton-Parker, followed by a Wednesday game against Augusta. Both games are scheduled to be played at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park, with Tuesday’s game starting at 5:00 p.m. and Wednesday’s game kicking off at 4:00 p.m.
