VSU Women’s Tennis Blazes Past No. 21 Midwestern State

VALDOSTA – The Valdosta State women’s tennis mowed down the Midwestern State Mustangs, 6-3, in a midweek non-conference matchup on Wednesday at The VSU Tennis Courts in Valdosta, Ga.

With the win, Valdosta State upped their win total to six on the season against just five losses, each of which have come to teams ranked among the nation’s top ten. Meanwhile, the Mustangs suffered just their second loss of the season at the hands of the Lady Blazers to fall to 5-2 overall.

Midwestern State earned the first win of the day at No. 2 doubles, when Bianca Duff and Maddy Coffman took down Anja Cosovic and Daniela Barta, 8-3. The Lady Blazers rebounded quickly and decisively, however, earning a point from Anke Poncelet and Bea Morales Hernandez over Amy Clifton and Daria Panferova at No. 1, 8-2, followed by another victory for Estes Widdershoven and Laura Ubeda at No. 3 over Greta Lazzarotto and Ashley Ramirez, 8-5.

Facing a 2-1 deficit heading into singles action, MSU scored a win at No. 3 from Eirini Kontaki over Ubeda to tie the match up at 2-2, but Cosovic quickly returned momentum to the Lady Blazers with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Duff at No. 2.

Barta picked up a 6-0, 7-5 win over Ramirez at No. 6, and Morales Hernandez sealed the win at No. 1 just moments later with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 triumph.

Remaining matches for Valdosta State included a win for Schmidt over Coffman, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, at No. 4, and Lazzaratto toppled Poncelet, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0, at No. 5.

Valdosta State will continue their 2017 schedule with a 2:00 p.m. matchup with Nebraska-Kearney on Monday, March 20th, in Valdosta, Ga.
