VSU Men’s Tennis Reels Off Two-Win Weekend

VALDOSTA The Valdosta State men’s tennis team put together a strong weekend of tennis to claim a pair of Gulf South Conference wins on Friday and Sunday against Shorter and Alabama-Huntsville, respectively.

The No. 5 ranked Blazers improved to 4-2 on the season and 2-1 in GSC play after defeating Shorter 8-1 in Rome, Ga. on Friday and following up with a dominant 8-1 victory over the Chargers in Huntsville, Ala. on Sunday.

Friday’s match began with the Blazers claiming a 3-0 advantage in doubles play, as Eden Peleg and Axel Holm picked up an 8-4 win at No. 1, before Jordi Mas and Fernando Rivas followed with an 8-2 win over Patrick Sanders and Mason Barnette at No. 2.

In the final position, Leo Blay and Davis Stewart gave the Blazers strong momentum heading into singles action after not allowing a point to their opponent at No. 3 for an 8-0 victory.

Blay, Mas, Peleg, Stewart, and Valentin Mounoto all blew by their opponents in singles action, and Shorter claimed their only point of the day at No. 6, where the Hawks’ Arthur Amat scored a win.

In Sunday’s action, it was more of the same for the red and black, as Peleg and Holm paired up at No. 1 doubles for an 8-3 win over Sebastian Rohrbach and Timo Christen. At No. 2, Rivas and Mas also followed with an 8-4 win over Guilherme Coleta and Chris Miller.

Valdosta State suffered a loss at No. 3 doubles when Brodie Holmes and Rodrigo Palomino scored an 8-5 victory over Blay and Mounoto, but VSU bounced right back in singles action, starting at No. 1, where Blay took down Rohrbach, 6-1, 6-4. Mas followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Miller at No. 2, and Rivas toppled Elliott Hopson at No. 3.

UAH scored their only other point of the day with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 4 over Peleg, but Stewart righted the ship to finish off the Chargers with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win over Coleta at No. 5, followed by a6-3, 6-3 victory for Holm over Harrison Stone at No. 6.

Valdosta State’s next scheduled matchup will take place on March 10th at 3:00 p.m., when the Blazers square off against No. 1 ranked Hawaii Pacific at the neutral site of Armstrong State in Savannah, Ga.
