Voters went to the polls in South Georgia yesterday casting ballots on a variety of community issues from electing a sheriff to Sunday alcohol sales. SPLOST referendums were approved in Coffee and Colquitt Counties and the Sunday sale of alcohol and Sunday package alcohol sales were voted in by voters in Thomasville. The race for the office of Sheriff in Miller County ended in a runoff.


A Lowndes County school bus driver ran afoul of the law. Amanda Mullinax was taken into custody by Sheriff’s deputies and charged with Driving Under the Influence; Mullinax was about to transport students when she was stopped at Hahira Middle School and arrested.


School administrators and public health officials in South Georgia and across the state are having to decide just how to deal with the recent flu outbreak that is affecting students and staffers. Southwest Health District officials continue to monitor the number of ill students who are absent due to the flu while Colquitt County schools have been closed for the rest of the week as officials hope to limit the spread of the virus. Lee and Dougherty County school administrators say that their student bodies and staffers have also been impacted.


Four people were arrested in Valdosta after a failed residential burglary. The female occupant of the Tyndall Drive residence reported to police that the quartet of burglars attempted to break into her residence. Officers responded along with a K-9 Unit and a short time later the three juveniles and their adult accomplice were in custody.


Preparing First Responders for emergency situations was the focus of a meeting in Lowndes County. Multiple agencies came together to discuss their plans for quick time responses to natural disasters, an active shooter engagement and other emergency operations. Lowndes County Public Information Officer Paige Dukes cited the high level of inter-agency cooperation-coordination and communication that serve to enhance the safety of area residents.
