Lady Blazers Advance to GSC Semifinal With 66-41 Win Over DSU

| March 1, 2017

VALDOSTA – The Valdosta State Lady Blazer basketball team used a stellar offensive performance in a 66-41 rout of Delta State to earn a trip to the Gulf South Conference Tournament semifinal round on Saturday in Birmingham, Ala.

It took some time for the Lady Blazer offense to come alive, but after taking a narrow 8-4 lead during the first quarter, the VSU offense exploded for 21 second quarter points. During the stretch, the Lady Blazer defense held the Lady Statesmen to just six field goals on 13 attempts for a 19.4 shooting percentage. The result was a 29-13 for Valdosta State at the half.

In the second half, Valdosta State blew the game wide open with the help of First Team All-GSC honoree Madi Mitchell, who lived up to the hype in the opening round matchup with 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field. 15 of Mitchell’s points came in the second half, which accounted for nearly half of VSU’s 37-second half points.

The Lady Statesmen fared much better in the second half with 28 points, but Valdosta State negated DSU’s effort with a 50.0 percent (15-of-30) shooting display from the field in the second half and a 60.0 percent (3-of-5) performance from the three point line.

Aaliyah Cheatham recorded 12 points thanks to four threes on the night, while Sonya Franklin added 11 and Kenya Samone’ Dixon chipped in with nine.

With the win, the Lady Blazers jumped to 20-9 on the season, while the Statesmen saw their season come to an end at 14-14 overall.

Next up for Valdosta State, it’s the semifinal round in Birmingham, Ala. against the No. 3 ranked Lee Lady Flames. Tip time is slated for 3:15 EST, and the game will take place at Pete Hannah Center at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.
