| March 8, 2017

VALDOSTA – The Valdosta State Blazer baseball team saw a pair of stellar pitching performances on Saturday afternoon against the visiting West Alabama Tigers, and the effort of Hunter Jones in the day’s opener led to a 2-0 win for Valdosta State and the junior’s first Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week honor.

Jones blanked the Tigers on Saturday over the course of seven innings pitched, while Roman Donofro and Beau Blair teamed up to seal the shutout victory for the Blazers and set the tone for a weekend series in which VSU took two out of three.

During his seven innings pitched, Jones struck out eight batters and allowed just two hits. He retired 20 of the 25 batters he faced in the game, allowing just two walks with one hit batsman. The shutout represented the second of the season for Valdosta State and lowered Jones’ ERA to a league-best 1.48. In addition, the win boosted the Palatka, Fla. native’s record to 2-0.

The Blazers return to action for a midweek non-conference matchup against Flagler at 5:00 p.m. The game is set to take place at Billy Grant Field in Valdosta, Ga.
