Big First Inning Leads VSU Softball to 4-0 Win Over Union

| March 20, 2017

VALDOSTA – The Valdosta State softball team slammed the door on a big Gulf South Conference weekend with a 4-0 win over the visiting Union Bulldogs on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Valdosta, Ga.

The Blazers got on the board early after Jessica Mohl walked to lead off the bottom of the first inning and Chelsea Canara followed with her eighth homer of the season. Mohl and Cruthers barely made it back into the dugout before Hayley Cruthers launched her fifth home run of the season, a tape measure shot that landed well beyond the right field wall. The three quick runs chased Union’s starting pitcher, Gabby Morris, out of the game, and reliever Parker Davis walked a pair before Hayley Fowler greeted her with an RBI double to right center to put VSU on top 4-0.

The four-run first was the only scoring that took place on the day, as the VSU bats were held to just one more hit throughout the remainder of the game. Freshman Avery Lamb took it from there, however, working four scoreless innings before turning the game over to teammate Kasie Johnson, who held the shutout intact to help Lamb improve to 10-1 on the year.

With the win, VSU improved to 24-6 overall and lifted their GSC record to 13-2. In contrast, the Bulldogs fell to 14-13 overall and 4-11 against league opponents on the season.

Cruthers was phenomenal at the plate on the weekend, finishing 6-for-9 with five RBI’s, four runs scored, and two extra base hits. The senior racked up 10 total bases, resulting in a 1.111 slugging percentage during the series sweep against Union.

Next up for the Blazers, it’s a trip to Cleveland, Tenn., where Valdosta State will continue conference play on Saturday, March 25th. The three game weekend set will kick off with a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. EST, with live coverage available at
