ECHOLS COUNTY, Ga. – One man is dead following a Valentine’s Day crash in Echols County, the Georgia State Patrol reports.

On Tuesday, GSP responded to a crash on Howell Road, just east of Lower Grand Bay Road.

According to GSP, a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 25-year-old Luis Alejandro Segundo, of Statenville, was traveling west on Howell Road.

As Segundo was attempting to negotiate a curve, the vehicle traveled off the north shoulder of the roadway. Officials say Segundo overcorrected, causing the vehicle to rotate and travel off the south shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle then traveled through a ditch and struck a tree.

Troopers say Segundo and the passenger, 25-year-old Justin Ty Holifield, of Valdosta, were not wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the vehicle.

The vehicle then continued westbound through a creek before coming to a final rest off the south shoulder of Howell Road.

Segundo was transported to South Georgia Medical Center by ambulance, but died from his injuries on Wednesday night.

Holifield was airlifted to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. His condition is not known.

Troopers suspect alcohol to be a contributing factor in the crash.
