VALDOSTA – A 14-year-old is charged with felony manslaughter after accidentally shooting and killing a 16-year-old relative, officers with the Valdosta Police Department say.

Police say when they responded to the 1000 block of Cherry Creek Drive around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, they found a 16-year-old boy suffering a gunshot wound to the chest.

He was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police say that a 14-year-old had been playing with a .22 rifle and accidentally shot the 16-year-old. He’s being charged with felony involuntary manslaughter through Georgia’s Department of Juvenile Justice.

“Although this is a tragic accident and our hearts go out to the family of these young boys, this case was treated like any other death investigation. When we determined by statute a crime was committed, the juvenile was properly charged”, VPD Chief Brian Childress. said through a statement issued Thursday.

Neighbors say that the 14-year-old lives in Cherry Creek Hills and that he’s a great kid. They also say he’s related to the 16-year-old who died from the gunshot. Those in the small community say the 16-year-old was just visiting family for the holidays.
