VALDOSTA –  The 2016-17 Valdosta State men’s basketball season is fast approaching, and there has never been a better time to support Blazer basketball.

Coach Mike Helfer‘s squad will shoot for a return trip to the Gulf South Conference Tournament this season and will be well equipped for the task thanks in large part to the return of big men Saadiq Muhammed and Justin Simon. The duo will return for their senior season, looking to repeat on their impressive performance last year as two of the top post players in the league.

The recruiting season was a productive one for the Blazer coaching staff, and a bevy of exciting new additions, including Florida Southern transfer Sheldon Zablotny and the high-flying, 6’7″ junior Jimmy Kodet out of Williamston, Mich. In addition, a new face with a familiar name has joined the ranks, as former Blazer favorite Blake Justice‘s younger brother, Beau Justice, represents one of many newcomers in 2016.

Blazer fans have the opportunity for a sneak peek at the team this Thursday, as Valdosta State is set to travel to Tallahassee, Fla. for a preseason matchup against the Florida State Seminoles. The event will serve as FSU’s annual fundraiser/exhibition contest, where the Seminoles honor former FSU guard Aubry Boyd, who suffered a tragic injury and became a paraplegic just a few years after the conclusion of his collegiate career.

“I am very thankful to Coach Hamilton and Coach Jones for giving us the opportunity to participate in this exhibition game,” said Helfer. “The exposure you receive for your program and your university is tremendous and will have a positive affect throughout the entire season. We will play as hard as we normally play and try and execute the things we have worked on in the pre-season. This will be a great experience for us.”

A five-dollar donation will be taken at the gate in the form of a cover charge for admission, and all proceeds will go toward the assistance of Boyd Andy his ongoing medical fees. Boyd is expected to attend and will also be recognized at halftime of the game.

The countdown to the opening tip is on, and it’s going to be a season to remember for Blazer basketball! VSU’s official home schedule opens up on Monday, November 21st at 7:00 p.m.
