All proceeds benefited local Special Olympics athletes and supported their travel to state competitions.

The “Volunteer of the Year Award” honors a volunteer whose efforts have had a lasting effect on recreational programs in the community. The winner, Mary Townsend, has volunteered at VLPRA’s Senior Center for more than 10 years and logged more than 2,500 volunteer hours. Townsend helps run the front desk, activity registrations, and acts as an ambassador for VLPRA as she is not only a volunteer, she is also a Senior Center member.

The “Jim ‘Buck’ Goff Distinguished Professional Award” is a high honor recognizing an individual who has made outstanding and lasting contributions to the field of recreation. VLPRA Executive Director George Page received the award for his outstanding service to the community, his work with GRPA and other professional organizations, and his leadership over the award-winning Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks & Recreation Authority.

VLPRA received the awards at the GRPA District 3 Conference Banquet in Columbus, Georgia in mid-October. GRPA’s 3rd District is made up of 28 recreation agencies throughout South Georgia. VLPRA is up for more awards at the state level; those awards will be given at GRPA’s State Conference November 9th.
