Remerton shooting suspect on the run

REMERTON – Police are searching for a suspect following a shooting at a Remerton apartment complex Wednesday afternoon.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., the Remerton Police Department responded to the Jackson Square Apartments at 1300 Melody Lane in response to a reported shooting, said RPD Investigators Derrick Sinclair.

A man was found with a superficial gunshot wound to his leg and was taken to South Georgia Medical Center for treatment. He was released a few hours later, Sinclair said.

Operating under the assumption that the shooter was still in one of the apartments, RPD officers obtained a search warrant to search the complex.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Valdosta Police Department, the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and the Valdosta State University Police Department.

LCSO deputies took the lead in the search, using tear gas before entering the apartment in which the suspect was believed to be hiding.

The search of the building was called off at approximately 5:15 p.m. without locating the suspect.

Sinclair said investigators have identified the suspect and that the shooter and the victim knew each other. Investigators also believe the shooting was an isolated incident.

While officials have not released a name for the suspect, Sinclair provided a description to Valdosta Today Thursday morning.

“The suspect is a black male, five feet and 10 inches tall with a thin build,” Sinclair said. “At the time of the incident, he was wearing all black: a black shirt and black pants.”

Jackson Square mainly houses students from VSU, but investigators do not believe the shooter is a VSU student, Sinclair said.

Anyone with information about the shooting or the suspect is asked to call 911.
