Two killed in Lanier County wreck

LANIER Co. – The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a two vehicle wreck that killed two people Saturday night in Lanier County.

At approximately 6:05 p.m., GSP Trooper Ben Taylor responded to a two vehicle crash on GA 125 approximately 0.1 mile south of Palmetto Pines Lane in Lanier County.

A 2002 Dodge Dakota, driven by 70 year old Linda Gale Gillis of Ray City was traveling south on GA 125.

A 2006 Ford Mustang, driven by 68 year old Jean Bavender Remington of Ray City was traveling north on GA 125.

The Dakota crossed the centerline and traveled into the northbound lane of GA 125. The Dakota struck the front end of the Mustang with the front end of the Dakota. After impact, the Dakota rotated counter-clockwise continuing southbound and came to a final rest in the southbound lane of GA 125 facing east. The Mustang traveled backwards, southbound on GA 125 and came to a final rest on the east shoulder of GA 125 facing north.

Both Ms. Gillis and Ms. Remington were pronounced deceased on scene. A juvenile passenger in the Dakota was transported to South Georgia Medical Center by Berrien County EMS for injuries sustained to her lower extremities.

Ms. Gillis was unrestrained at the time of the collision. Ms. Remington and the juvenile passenger were properly restrained. Airbag deployment was noted in both vehicles.

Troopers do not suspect alcohol or drugs to be a contributing factor in this collision.

Troopers suspect that the Dakota did not have its headlights on at the time of the collision and may have been a contributing factor in this crash.

No charges will be filed in this collision. Next of kin has been notified.
