VSU Golf Wins UIS Island Getaway Tournament

RIO MAR, Puerto Rico – The Valdosta State golf team held fast to their first round lead during the final round of the UIS Island Getaway on Tuesday morning to claim a seven-stroke advantage and a first place finish in Rio Mar, Puerto Rico.

The Blazers closed out the event with a 13-over 589 team effort on the par 72, 6,902 course at the Rio Mar Country Club. The performance was strong enough to edge out the remaining four participating teams, including the defending NCAA Division II Champion Saint Leo Lions, who finished in third place at 21-over 628.

Colton Godwin posted the top overall performance for Valdosta State, after an even-72 round on Tuesday helped lift him into a second place finish at 2-over 146. Olav Zandveld and Davis Roche rounded out the top three scores in the tournament and tied for third place at 3-over 147.

Freshman Jordan Long also claimed a top-ten finish at 5-over 149 (5th place), as did Matt Anderson, who delivered a 9-over 153 card (9th place).

Nathan Goecks of Illinois-Springfield claimed the top position at 4-under 140, while VSU’s Jake Harpe participated as an individual and posted a score of 10-over 154.

The tournament concluded Valdosta State’s fall schedule. The Blazers will kick off their spring schedule at The Matlock in Lakeland, Fla. on February 13th.
