Soccer Caps Off Weekend With 1-0 Win Over Delta State

| October 12, 2016

CLEVELAND, Miss.A tightly defended contest ended in favor of the Valdosta State soccer team, who picked up a big Gulf South Conference victory over the Delta State Lady Statesmen in a Sunday afternoon road match in Cleveland, Miss.

“We had a game plan going into today’s match, and we were able to execute it,” said Head Coach Rebecca Nolin following the victory. “The girls understood their role, and we knew we would get chances. It was just a matter of capitalizing on them. These girls worked very hard as a team and thoroughly deserved this win.”

Valdosta State fired off six shots in the first half against nine by Delta State, but neither team was able to connect for a score in the opening period. After returning to the field for the second half, the Blazers were able to form an attack during the 66th minute when a tip over the bar by DSU keeper Emily Oldacre turned away a Mallory McDaniel opportunity. Suvi Savolainen served up a corner during the ensuing moments, and Tessa Bates redirected a header into the net for the deciding score and the first goal of her Valdosta State career.

Delta State racked up 19 shots in the match, but Blazer keeper Alyssa Curtis was up to the challenge and delivered nine saves en route to her second shutout of the season.

The victory lifted Valdosta State to 1-9-2 on the year and 1-5-1 in conference play, while the Lady Statesmen fell to 4-8 overall and 0-7 against league opponents.

Valdosta State will be back at home on Friday, October 14 for a home matchup against Union at the VSU Soccer Complex in Valdosta, Ga. The match is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
