LOWNDES CO., Ga. (WCTV) — Everyone knows Halloween is supposed to be a little bit scary, but fearing sex offenders should not be the reason.

Starting Monday evening, the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office is sending deputies door-to-door to nearly 300 offender’s homes.

They do this every year until Halloween night.

It’s to make sure offenders are at their right location and are not participating in Halloween activities.

They say they are not allowed to do anything that could encourage people to their homes, not even leave on a porch light.

If they’re caught, they can see up to five to ten years in jail.

Just last year, Lowndes County caught ten offenders during Halloween. Three were participating in trick-or-treating.

“Halloween is a predominantly child-drive event and it’s large amount of kids going out in neighborhoods and to homes they don’t know,” says Capt. Stryde Jones, with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office. “We don’t want them encountering the sex offenders and we don’t want the sex offenders encountering them, so it’s just easiest to take a proactive approach and keep everyone as safe as we can.”

Something parents should also consider is not all offenders are restricted from participating.

The LCSO says only those on probation can see jail time, if caught.

While that may worry parents, they say those who finish probation are still visited and under a watchful eye.

Officials are warning the public to be vigilant of these homes on Halloween.

You can find the local list of sex offenders HERE.

Halloween hours in the City and County are Monday evening from 6 until 9.

The ones that are not on probation can do what they want as far as Halloween goes. Not one law can stop them

  2. Concerned citizen says:

Well in Rebecca Ga. we don’t put up with this kind of mess. I am sorry Mr. Will but the law does stop this kind of mess in Rebecca

    • will says:

Well this is not rebecca ga. This is lowndes county. The problem is that people think sex offender means people raping a 5 year old and that is always not the case. I’m sorry you are shallow with your thoughts. The authorities check the ones that are on active cases. There is nothing done with a person that has completed there sentence.
