VALDOSTA – Family members of a Valdosta woman killed in a Wednesday fire say she fell asleep while cooking.

Valdosta Fire Department officials responded to a house fire at 603 E. 3rd Avenue around 9:43 a.m. Wednesday.

70-year-old Alneatha Whitfield was killed in the blaze.

On Thursday, Whitfield’s family told a WCTV reporter that it appeared she was cooking, accidentally fell asleep, and ultimately died from smoke inhalation.

Family members also say two dogs were killed in the blaze.

The Valdosta Fire Department is continuing to investigate the fire. An official cause of death has not yet been determined.
