Blazers Close Out Weekend With 3-0 Sweep Over Saint Leo

ORLANDO, Fla.The Valdosta State volleyball team closed out an impressive weekend with a big 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-21) South Region win over the Saint Leo Lions at the Crossover Tournament between the Gulf South Conference and the Sunshine State Conference today in Orlando, Fla.

The Blazers fell behind 10-7 early in the opening frame, before turning the momentum around with a 6-2 run. After taking the 13-12 lead, VSU never trailed again in the first set and picked up a 25-21 victory to set the tone.

Valdosta State continued their surge throughout the second set and managed to hold off a late run by the Lions in order to maintain the edge for a narrow 26-24 win, which placed the Blazers in control of the match with a 2-0 lead.

In the third and final frame, VSU outscored Saint Leo 10-3 in the opening moments of the set before Saint Leo reeled off a 12-5 run to tie the set up at 15-15. The Blazers gathered themselves, however, and never allowed the Lions to take a lead. The two teams traded points in the final stretch of the match before Valdosta State surged late to seal the deal.

Antia Rodriguez-Sanchez delivered yet again for the Blazers on the attack with 12 kills and just three errors for a .360 hitting percentage, representing her second highest hitting percentage number this season. The senior also added five digs and two blocks, while Ashley Miller posted an impressive .364 hitting effort with four kills and no errors in 11 attempts.

Carly Smart set the table for Valdosta State throughout the contest with 26 assists, and the sophomore joined both Sydney Chick and Susanna Peonia on defense for double digit numbers in the dig column.

The victory lifted Valdosta State to 10-11 on the season, while the Lions fell to 10-7 overall.

Valdosta State’s next scheduled match is slated for Friday, October 21st in Valdosta, Ga., as the rival Tigers of West Alabama enter The Complex for a 7:00 p.m., homecoming weekend showdown.
