ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. Valdosta State jumped out to strong start early at the Flagler Invitational in St. Augustine, Fla. on Saturday, but the Blazers ran out of steam midway through the contest and ultimately suffered a pair of losses to both Southern Indiana (3-2 (25-16, 25-19, 23-25, 15-25, 10-15)) and Flagler (3-1 (23-25, 18-25, 25-16, 19-25)).

In the opening game of the day, the Blazers (1-2) established a 9-4 lead after a service ace by Antia Rodriguez-Sanchez and never looked back, scoring six straight points to close out a 25-16 first set win.

The second set proved to be more of the same, as Gabie Velez-Ortizoffered up a service ace to start a 6-1 run by the Blazers to start off the frame. Southern Indiana (3-0) rebounded with an 8-2 run of their own to take a 9-8 lead, but VSU surged later in the set with six unanswered points to open up a 22-17 lead that the Eagles could not overcome.

From that point on, however, Valdosta State’s day took a turn for the worse. Southern Indiana pulled off a tight 25-23 win in the third set before taking complete control of the match and outscoring the Blazers 40-25 in the final two frames.

The second match featured a competitive opening set, which ended in a 25-23 win for Flagler (2-1) over VSU, but the Blazers were unable to eclipse the 20-point mark in two of their final three sets in the match.

VSU surged in the third set with a dominant performance, in which the Blazers posted a .273 hitting effort against Flagler’s .065 performance. Valdosta State was unable to hold momentum, however, and fell 25-19 in the final frame to close out the day.

Susanna Peonia delivered two more double-double performances, improving the senior to three straight. In addition, Kayla Widera and Ashley Miller both offered up 11 blocks each on defense, and Sydney Chick scored a career high 26 digs in the USI match.

Valdosta State now turns their attention to next weekend, when the Blazers will travel to Miami Shores, Fla. for a tournament at Barry University. The first opponent for VSU in the tournament will be Southern Connecticut State, and the match is slated for a 3:00 p.m. start on Friday, Sept. 9th.
