Volleyball Splits Final Day of Barry Classic

MIAMI, Fla. The Valdosta State volleyball team picked up a dominant 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-20) victory over Lees-McRae before dropping the second match of the day 3-1 (25-27, 25-21, 25-17, 25-13) to the Fighting Knights of Lynn on Saturday at the Barry University Classic in Miami, Fla.

The Blazers delivered their best offensive outing of the 2016 season in the first match of the day and were led by Susanna Peonia, who crushed a career-high 19 kills. Peonia’s effort resulted in a .310 hitting percentage and contributed to a season-high .242 hitting percentage by the Blazer offense.

In contrast, Valdosta State’s defense held the Bobcats to a .155 percentage on the attack and racked up 36 digs in the process. Sydney Chick led the way with nine digs, while Ashley Millernotched four blocks in the match.

Despite the relatively tight set scores, the Blazers remained in control throughout the majority of the match to pick up their first set sweep of the year.

Valdosta State carried the momentum of the triumph over into the latter match of the day to take an early 1-0 lead with an exciting 27-25 victory in the opening frame against Lynn. The Blazers hit just .075 in the set, but a series of timely blocks, along with 24 team digs, helped VSU to the early advantage.

The Blazers continued to apply pressure in set two, but Lynn overcame an early 8-12 deficit with a 6-1 run, which put the Fighting Knights in front 14-13. LU held the lead throughout the remainder of the set to even the contest up at 1-1.

In the third, Lynn kicked their attack into another gear, doling out 16 kills against just four errors for a .316 hitting percentage. The dramatic improvement helped the Fighting Knights overcome the Blazers, 25-17, in the set and put the team in cruise control for a convincing 25-13 victory in the fourth and final set.

Nicol Colonna led the way for Lynn with an impressive .441 (17 kills, 2 errors, 34 attempts) percentage on the attack, whileAntia Rodriguez-Sanchez paced the Blazers at .294 (6 kills, 1 error, 17 attempts). As a team, the Fighting Knights delivered a .207 hitting percentage against VSU’s .142 performance.

The Blazers slid to 2-5 on the year following the day’s results, while Lees-McRae fell to 1-5. Lynn’s pair of wins on Saturday improved the Fighting Knights to 6-1 on the season.
