VALDOSTA (WCTV Eyewitness News) – Valdosta State University geared up for its first home game of the season. Fans tailgated all day in preparation for kickoff.

They hit the tents early to celebrate the new season, and fans say that although there are a few changes to this year’s team, they’re just ready for football season to be back.

Fans, young and old are ready to see the Blazers in action.

“Just to see the fans and have a good crown and yeah, just be happy,” says VSU student, Michaela Connors.
This is the team’s first year with new head coach Kerwin Bell, but fans say they’re not worried about the change, they’re still confident in their team.

“Looking forward to seeing the new offense, the new defense, everything we got going on. This is great, I love the atmosphere out here right now, the game day atmosphere,” says VSU student, Tre Worriels.

“Just super excited to get back into football and it’s been a long time for me,” says VSU student, Graham Dumett.

Hurricane Hermine ripped through south Georgia on Thursday, but these tailgaters say a little bit of rain can’t stop the Blazers from taking home that win.

Andrew Niehus, VSU student

“I was worried that the game would be either pushed back or cancelled, I think it was pushed back actually, but I was afraid it would be cancelled because I love tailgating,” Niehus said.

The Valdosta State blazers are coming off of a playoff season from last year, but these fans say they’re confident that the team can go all the way this year.

The Blazers went on to win Staurday’s game against Albany State 16 to 7.
