LOWNDES Co. – A Valdosta man was killed in a collision on Cat Creek Road Thursday afternoon.

At approximately 5:25 p.m., the Georgia State Patrol was dispatched to a crash on Cat Creek Road approximately 0.1 miles south of New Bethel Road, according to GSP Lt. Chris Kelch.

“A white 1990 Ford pick-up, towing a grain hauler farm equipment, was traveling north on Cat Creek Road. This vehicle was driven by Walter Clayton, 63, of Sparks, GA. A white 1996 Dodge Stratus was traveling south on Cat Creek Road. This vehicle was driven by Gary Cantrell, 58, of Valdosta, GA. Lawrence Robinette,38, of Nashville, GA, was a front passenger of the Dodge Stratus,” said Kelch.

Both vehicles were negotiating a curve. The towed trailer of the Ford pick-up became disconnected and traveled to the lane of travel of the Dodge Stratus.

“The trailer struck the Dodge Stratus head-on, killing the driver, Mr. Cantrell on impact. The passenger of the Dodge Stratus sustained minor injuries,” Kelch said.

The roadway was closed for approximately 2.5 hours. Seat belts were in use for all occupants of each vehicle. No airbag deployment was noted.

Troopers do not suspect alcohol or drugs to be a contributing factor but will be pending toxicology reports.

Charges are pending in junction with the completion of the Troop H SCRT investigation.
