Ray Norton: Doing it right the first time

| September 8, 2016

VALDOSTA – “We always say that if they come one time, then it’s our place to make sure they keep coming. If we treat them right, they are going to want to come back, and that’s what I tell all of my employees.”

Ray Norton has been in the auto care and tire business for 31 years.

“At this location (corner of Bemiss Road and Connell Road), since 1995, which is 21 years. I was downtown 10 years before that,” said Ray Norton.

ray-norton-artAnd for those three decades, Norton has worked hard to be an industry leader by thinking of his shop as “a ministry.”
“If you treat a customer like your mother or sister, you can’t keep them out of the door,” Norton said. “If you are rude or don’t act like you care, they will go to some other place. That sets us apart. We treat people like family.”

Ray Norton Tire & Auto Center offers complete auto repair service, with the exception of automatic transmissions, which they refer to a specialist. Norton is also a dealer for Michelin, BF Goodrich and Uniroyal Alliance Dealer and is capable of working any Tire Warranty issues for these particular manufacturers, excluding discounted club tires.

“Of course, we offer any and all major tire brands,” Norton said. “We do sell truck accessories, too. We are very heavy into truck accessories: trailer hitches, grill guards, toolboxes, nerf bars, bed liners, Weather Tech accessories and that sort of thing.”

But on top of the friendly service and wide variety of tires and accessories is a commitment to quality that keeps customers coming back.

“Doing the job right the first time,” Norton said. “That sets us apart. We do have a very loyal base of customers, and we keep, for the most part, the same employees that have been with us for many years. From 17 years on down to 10, the customers see the same people all the time, and some want to deal with the same person, and we try to have them available.”

Norton’s ASE-certified auto mechanics handle a variety of automotive repair services like wheel alignments, brake repairs, battery replacements, steering and suspension system repairs, engine diagnostics, heating and air conditioning repairs, preventive maintenance, and replacement of belts and hoses. Norton also services hybrid vehicles and diesels

Norton is also on the cutting edge by offering a service that makes tires last longer.

“When we quote a tire price, it is the total out-the-door price: mounted, balance and taxes included and also nitrogen,” Norton said. “Nitrogen in your tires provides better gas mileage, longer tire life, and improved handling.”

Norton believes every tire shop will eventually switch to using nitrogen instead of regular compressed air to fill tires, but for now he is content to be ahead of the curve and offer it as a standard service to his customers.

Ray Norton Tire & Auto Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Their website gives customers the option of shopping for tires, services, wheels and truck accessories online.
